“They want their money back.”
What to say when a client asks for their money back — and how to come out with your reputation stronger, not weaker.
The message just hit your inbox. “Hey, I'd like a refund.” Your stomach drops. Your brain offers two bad options — and both cost you. Fight back, you win the argument and lose the relationship. Roll over, you lose your boundaries (and usually the money anyway).
Handled right, a refund request leaves you with your money intact, your reputation stronger, and — sometimes — more referrals than you started with, including from the client who asked for it. The key is the first response, which buys you 24 hours to diagnose which of five situations you're actually in before choosing a path.
